A year ago, the first International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) took place in New York in May 2022 to evaluate progress in the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). Following a year-long comprehensive and cohesive preparatory process leading up to the IMRF, members of the Civil Society Action Committee (AC) mobilised civil society from across the world and promoted open dialogue on the implementation of the GCM. Despite collective efforts and achievements resulting from our self-organisation, the IMRF itself led us to witness a regression in access for civil society and migrants themselves in the process.
In view of the upcoming 2024 Regional Migration Review Forums (RMRFs) and 2026 IMRF, the AC is pleased to announce the publication of our IMRF 2022 Assessment Paper, a key document outlining collective takeaways and unpacking barriers to civil society engagement. The central part of this paper revolves around eleven commitments and action points that will guide the AC’s advocacy to prompt receptive and more inclusive measures by UN Member States, international organisations, and other stakeholders.
Inadequate access to information, fragmented and scarce avenues for multi-stakeholder interaction, as well as a lack of funding and visa support are among the many factors that prevented our meaningful participation in the IMRF and engagement with Member States.
