Ahead of the 2022 International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), on Sunday, 15 May 2022, more than 150 civil society representatives from around the world gathered in New York as well as online, to take part in our IMRF Civil Society Preparatory Day (CSPD), organised by the Civil Society Action Committee.

The CSPD’s aim was to enable civil society engaging in the IMRF to be fully and adequately prepared to enter the deliberations in a unified and organised manner. It represented the culmination of a year-long process of civil society preparatory sessions, advocacy dialogues, and consultations.

In addition to identifying gaps in GCM implementation, CSPD participants were determined to approach the IMRF looking forward, outlining actions needed in the future. During the event, it was repeatedly stressed that civil society’s priorities reflect the reality of migrants’ lives and the need for implementation of the GCM at the grassroots level and on the ground: civil society brings a crucial perspective that needs to be fully taken into account in the GCM implementation efforts by governments in the four years leading up to the next IMRF.
