UN Member States are in the final stages in negotiating the Ministerial Declaration to be adopted for the 2021 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

Unfortunately, migrants and migration have been systematically left out of or minimized in the Ministerial Declaration, despite SDG 10 (including Target 10.7 on migration) being reviewed.
Read the Declaration’s latest draft (as of 15 June 2021) here

What can civil society do?

Advocate with UN Member States to have a more impactful, substantive, and actionable language on migrants and migration in this year’s HLPF Ministerial Declaration. In particular, ask them to:

  • call for and/or support the inclusion of a distinct paragraph in the Ministerial Declaration on migrants, migration and the SDGs,
  • that references the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), as the primary implementation mechanism of SDG 10.7,
  • and calls for action by States to implement and take measures to realize SDG 10.7 and all other migration-related goals in the SDGs,
  • in accordance with the human rights of migrants, regardless of status.

The Civil Society Action Committee has just sent this open letter to the Declaration’s Co-Facilitators and the President of ECOSOC.  Please read and share this letter widely, especially with other UN Member States.

Important timeline note: The final round of informal consultations is TODAY, Thursday 24 June 2021. We urge all civil society organizations to consider sending your own letters to UN Member States, especially to the Declaration’s Co-Facilitators and the President of ECOSOC, and to try to do so by the end of today (New York time).

We thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.
